Phil Simmons to Speak at Climate Change Conference in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Phil Simmons has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from Sydney University and Master of Arts and PhD from Duke University. After his Doctorate he was a Senior Economist at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics in Canberra, Australia. He later joined the School of Agricultural & Resource Economics at the University of New England where he became Head of Agricultural & Economics and later Group Leader for Economics. Phil has broad ranging research interests including development where he is the Editor of an international journal in development economics. In the last twelve months his focus has shifted to energy markets and possible alternatives to coal generated electricity. In this area, he is interested in costs of capital in different types of energy markets, especially risk premiums, and using CGE-GTAP models to understand different energy scenarios.

A chartered bus (or mini-bus) and a licensed tour-guide will meet us at the lobby of the JW Marriott and escort us to Urca, a historical neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro.

From Urca, we will take a cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain to take in wonderful views of Rio beaches and landscapes.  The 360 degree view from the cable cars creates unparalleled sight-seeing opportunities.

Larry Pryor to Speak at 2011 Climate Change Conference

Larry Pryor has worked as a reporter, writer, editor and photographer, first at the Louisville Courier-Journal and later at the Los Angeles Times. At those publications, he covered the environment and became an assistant metropolitan editor at the Times with responsibility for topics involving science, medicine, urban affairs and the environment. He left journalism to work with Gov. Jerry Brown as press secretary in a presidential campaign and published a novel. He went back to the Times and took part in new media projects there, starting in the 1980s. He became editor of latimes.com, before moving to USC in 1997 to head the Online Journalism and Communications Program at the Annenberg School and to edit the Online Journalism Review. He has since returned to concentrating on environmental journalism. In addition to teaching, he researches topics associated with climate change and public discourse.

Learn about our convict past as we walk past historic buildings and landmarks that have survived despite the frantic development of the last 25 years. At the end of the walk you too will see why Brisbane has truly become “Australias’ new world city” The walk lasts about 90 minutes.

Come and see why more than 1 million people have made Brisbane their home in the last 20 years. The once sleepy ‘big country town’ is now a big country town with big city sophistication. Brisbane is truly ‘Australia’s new world city’ We commence with a tour of the history and heritage of the city. We then continue our tour through the rapidly growing “renovation suburbs” only a couple of kilometres from the city at then commence a climb to the highest point in Brisbane, Mt Coot-tha with stunning views across the city. We then continue our drive through the suburbs passing some of the best “Queenslander” homes in the city including the most picturesque street in the city. The tour will last approximately 2 hours.

2010 Climate Change Conference – Plenary Speaker Added

Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, University of Queensland, Australia

Ove Hoegh-Guldberg is Professor and Director of the Centre for Marine Studies at the University of Queensland. He completed his BSc. Hons at the University of Sydney and PhD at UCLA in 1989, and was recognized in 1999 with the Eureka prize for Research into the physiological mechanisms of coral bleaching. Specialising in the impact of climate change on biological systems, Ove has worked in polar, temperate and tropical regions, and is well-known for his work on the impacts of ocean warming and acidification on coral reefs. He is currently a Queensland Smart State Premier’s fellow, and holds positions as reviewing editor at Science Magazine and chair of the World Bank/GEF working group on coral reefs and climate change.
